Freezing
well, i seem to be having some trouble with in game freezing, and i have no idea what the problem is, so i need some help. The freezing only occurs during missions for some reason, and it doesnt seem to matter how long i have been playing. The freezing does not happen immediately as soon as i enter the mission either, it can occur well into the mission.
here are my system specs:
Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 1.60GHz
ASUS P4B266LM 400Mhz fbs
1.00GB DDR PC2700
ASUS NVIDIA GeForce 7600GS
200 GB ATA100 HD
Temps:
CPU: 48C ??
HD: 40C
GPU: 62C
The when it freezes, the character stops moving and the graphic is frozen as. Sound still plays, and i am able to minimize the window and do other things. Processor is 100% during this, and when the window is restored the screen is black. The system is old but it meets the minimum requirements. Any suggestions?

Defrag and update your drivers for your graphics card and DirectX.

drivers were already up to date, but i reinstalled them(along with removing remnants w/ drivercleaner.net). I also reinstalled direct x, and defragged the entire computer. However, if froze in the exact same spot as it did last time in the same mission

If its the same spot could be a problem with the gw.dat, have you tried reinstalling the game?

your processor is terible, 1.6 you say, GW:NF's recommanded is 2GHz.
i sugest buying a new one, it might cause your PC to slow down.

If you still get it check the fan on your graphics card is working and not clogged up with dust causing it to overheat.

dollars to donuts its either
a) heat
b) power supply
most after market vidcards will not have enough power to be run at max usage from a old/stock psu. Take that and the older cpu you have which is probably pinned at usage, your comp has a freeze-up.
As a rule of thumb (there are some exceptions) a psu running a newer graphics card needs to be 500watts at a MINIMUM.

their isn't a fan. i forgot to mention is a N7600GS silent. their is just a gigantic heatsink attached to it. Their isnt any dust. I installed it like two weeks ago and just checked it.
I think the power supply should be fine. I'm not noticing any voltage shortages and the graphics card has a 4-pin molex attached to it even tho it doesn't have a fan. I used a power supply calculator and even with 50% capacitor aging with 100% cpu usage i only get 347 watts, and my power supply is at least 430w. (i have no way of knowing exactly what it is because it is oem and its not labeled\ on the internet.)

I ran the mission again, and it froze at roughly the same point again. I minimized the program and tried to run the task manager, yet this and every ap i tried to launch failed for various reasons which i cannot explain. During the mission i was getting high frame rate roughly 50 fps with the lowest being in the low 30s, yet it failed. This gw.dat file was in two fragments, so that shouldnt be a problem. I just completely reinstalled the game too. Any help is appreciated. Im going to try to see if any windows files are missing by trying to find a program that checks this.

Dial a fix can check your system and fix a lot of errors.
Since you just installed a new graphics card, does your PSU match the requirements of the card?

I'm guessing your GPU is overheating. Try running the game on the lowest graphic settings and seeing how long it takes to freeze, then run it on the highest settings and see how long it takes. Also try to see what the temperature of your GPU is when the game freezes.

Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 1.60GHz runs hot intel abandoned this architecture model for this reason and now is using core 2 duo.
Temps:
CPU: 48C ??
HD: 40C
GPU: 62C
Are the above temps at idle or at crash? Are you using a decent program to monitor this? like everest ultimate (its a free trial, hint, hint)
Are you running after market cooler on the cpu or stock that came with chip?
Just because it has a giant heat sink does not mean it does not need air flow inside the case.
to test the heat theory:
run the guild wars mission with the side off you computer and point a box fan set on high or a large house fan right at the mother board. If you make it through the mission . . . It's heat.
The system is old but it meets the minimum requirements.
Are you running the game on minimum settings?

As has been mentioned, it sounds as though either the GPU is overheating, or the power supply is running out of juice (and/or overheating)
You didn't say what brand your power supply is. Some cheap ones are seriously over-rated.
So, things to try:
1. Make sure any and all fans in the case, on the cpu, and in the power supply are working.
2. Blow the dust out of any and all fans and heat sinks.
3. If your case doesn't have any fans other than the one in the power supply, add an exhaust fan at the rear of the case. A passively cooled GPU would require good air flow in the case.
4. Replace the power supply.
5. Lower the resolution of the game.

i used speed fan to take the temps, and they are at crash. there is only a two degree difference between the idle and load for the gpu. I am running the stock cooler on the cpu, and i already tried that thing with the giant fan. it lowered the temps significantly, but i still didnt make it through. it doesnt matter what setting i have the game set to. it still crashes regardless. bottleneck.
I have no idea who makes the power supply. its oem. the system was made it 2001.
i talked to some people at school and they seem to thing that the processor is bottlenecking the system, and the processor is always running at 100% regardless of the setting. so i tend to agree.
